www.ladbroke.co.uk – Australian front line fast bowler Stuart Clarke’s career may well be over after he pulled up sore during a net session in Perth yesterday, ruling him out of the first test against the South Africans.
The blow comes as Australia prepare for an all out war of the fast bowlers following the arrival of ‘the world’s fastest bowler’ in Dale Steyn along with countrymen Mkaya Ntini and Morne Morkel.
Perth is often a pitch that can be one by the quicks if they get on top early and Clark plays an integral role in tying down and frustrating a batsman with his unwavering line and length.
The Aussies may take some comfort from Brett Lee’s ominous return to form as well some decent form from the ever-reliable Mitchell Johnson.
Stuart Clarke’s best figures came against South Africa when he captured 20 wickets in a three test series that also happened to be Clarke’s debut series.
In that series he had an astounding average of just 15.85 runs per wicket.
A forlorn Clarke sat at training, apparently on the verge of tears, as he team mates did their best to console.
Clarke has missed the last two test series with a wear and tear injury to his elbow.
He will use the same surgeon that operated on Ricky Ponting’s wrist earlier in the year to remove bone fragment from the joints caused by throwing a cricket ball.
There a no guarantees for this kind of surgery and the thirty-three year old Clarke must now prepare for a life without cricket.
